Antique Heart Pine is a dense softwood with
high figuring. The heartwood is yellow after
cutting but turns a pinkish tan to a reddish brown
after weeks due to the high resin content. This
wood can be difficult to stain, so surface resins
may be removed with a 100% pure solvent that is
compatible with the finish to be used.
Frontier Heart Pine is a softwood selected
for 50-100% heartwood, found near the center of the
log, with a mix of plain and vertical grains. It is
manufactured from today's US southern pine
forests. Most of these forests are professionally
managed for sustainability, supporting the
regeneration of the southern pine species, including
longleaf, shortleaf and loblolly. Each board is
hand graded after milling to provide a choice of
appearances between grades based on natural
characteristics typical of pine such as grain
patterns and knots. Knots range from 1 inch to 4
1/2 inches, increasing proportionately to width.
Widths from 3 1/8 to 10 7/8 are available.
Plantation New Heart Pine is a softwood
selected for 75-100% heartwood, found near the
center of the log, with a mix of plain and vertical
grains. It is manufactured from today's US southern pine forests. Most of these forests are
professionally managed for sustainability,
supporting the regeneration of the southern pine
species, including longleaf, shortleaf and
loblolly. Each board is hand graded after milling
to provide a choice of appearances between grades
based on natural characteristics typical of pine
such as grain patterns and knots. Infrequent knots
range from 1 inch to 2 1/2 inch, increasing
proportionately to width. Widths from 3 1/8 to 10
7/8 are available.
Southern Yellow Pine heartwood can vary from
light yellow/orange to reddish or yellowish brown,
while the sapwood can be a creamier light tan to
yellowish white. It has a closed grain with high
figuring, with patterns ranging from clear to
knotty. It is quite soft, and can be difficult to
stain unless resins are removed with a compatible
solvent. Southern Yellow Pine is frequently
‘distressed’ to create an antique look.
